NICO Pensions has described the inaugural NICO Pension Seniors Golf tournament as an honour to the country’s veteran golf players.
The competition took place at Limbe Country Club (LCC) and was won by 83-year-old James Chikapa.
The company’s General Manager, Lilian Moyo, said the event was all-paid-for to ensure the participation of as many golfers as possible.
Moyo said it was pleasing to see over 80 golfers competing in the tournament despite it being hosted for the first time.
“We have been conducting these tournaments before under NICO Life. But this is NICO Pensions’ first tournament. Our main aim was to interact with the old players.
“These senior golfers are our parents and they deserve respect. That is why we made sure that we bring them together so that they enjoy themselves on the golf course,” she said.
Moyo said the competition was there to stay and would be organised every year.
Some of the golfers who took were part in the tournament from Blantyre Sports Club, Zomba as well as South Africa.
Chikapa was followed by MacPitry Hanjahanja and Bashir Sharif on second and third positions, respectively.
He deemed it fit to participate in the competition to prove that anything is possible with dedication and hard work.
“Emerging winner against 80 others was not an easy task. But I was focused to ensure that I achieve my goals. This is a good tournament and NICO deserves a thumbs up for considering old players like us,” Chikapa said.
In the falcons category, NICO Life Company Chief Executive Officer, Eric Chapola, emerged victorious but opted to hand over his prize to second-placed Ronwell Malikita, as he is part of the sponsors.
Prominent lawyer, John Gift Mwakhwawa, won the other seniors’ category seconded by Peter Patel and Edwin Chipala on third position.
NICO Pensions also donated K300,000 to LCC for renovations at the multi-sports discipline facility.
